High Specification Casting Testing
Non-destructive Testing (NDT) is the process undertaken to inspect, test or evaluate castings without destroying it.
Archibald Young Foundry employ a variety of NDT methods including:
Pressure Test
Any casting which is produced which is required to be leak proof will undertake a pressure test. Any openings of the casting will be closed and it will be pressurised with gas or fluid. If water is used, any water which seeps through the casting will indicate a leak, for gas the pressurised casting can be placed underwater with bubbles indicating a leak.
Radiography
Radiography can also be used to detect any internal defects in the casting. The casting is exposed to radiation and the ability of the waves to penetrate through metal depends on the density of the metal. Any hole or crack within the casting will be less dense than the casting alloy and will be easily revealed to the inspector.
Ultrasonic
Ultrasonic testing deploys high-frequency sound waves which can be used to identify internal defects. These are passed through the casting and results are delivered which can reveal any crack or void in the casting.
