OVERTIME... Moulder Stuart Lee (left) and MD David Lees ready
the casting for shipment to Thailand |

OLDHAM is doing its bit for the aid
operation in Asia following the Boxing day tsunami disaster.
Moulders at Premier Castings worked
overtime to cast a stuffing box for a power station in Krabi, Thailand.
The order arrived at the foundry in Green Street on Thursday evening via a
Glasgow contact.
Such was the urgency, later that evening, managing director David Lees
received a second call.
“Three Japanese engineers from Hitachi Power wanted to know if they could
call and collect the cast the next morning,” said an astonished Mr Lees.
Although the job was not too big — around 90 kilos — it still took most
of Friday and when the transport arrived early on Saturday morning it was
still cooling.
The box was taken back to Scotland when the team from Japan undertook
further work before the ‘Made in Oldham’ box was flown to a power
station in Thailand devastated by the tsunami.
Added Mr Lees: “We already had the pattern for this box, having made one
before, and obviously we were happy to help.
“We had to put the job ahead of other orders but I know that our customers
were fully understanding. In the end we were only around an hour behind our
schedule.”
